DETERMINE YOUR PET'S CORRECT SIZE

IMPORTANT FYI's:
- DON'T ORDER A LARGER SIZE than listed for your dog's weight just because they have a long snout. This will result in the Headrest being too big/wide and it will fall forward on your dog's eyes!
- Long Snout Breeds (i.e. Greyhounds) typically fit ONE SIZE DOWN from their weight.
- Breed Examples that fit X-LARGE include: St. Bernard's, Bull Mastiffs, Newfoundland Hounds, etc.
- Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. If the weight is on the line or overlaps, choose the SMALLER of the two.
- We are happy to help you determine the correct size as some breeds are trickier to fit than others. Please complete the NovaGuard Sizing Help Form.
NOVAGUARD: IMPORTANT APPLICATION TIPS

Animals Want To Understand and we as pet owners know they do! We also are guilty of sometimes forgetting to explain something new to them and end up causing some preventable issues.

A Classic Example... And What You Need To Avoid:

HERE'S THE PROBLEM:
- After surgery or during the initial fitting, the dog's first logical reaction is nonacceptance of something new. A dog that wakes up from anesthetic is in pain, and if the first time they are wearing the NovaGuard on their head is after surgery, they can easily think "This is to blame for my new pain - so if I tear it off, the pain will stop!"
- They will probably have this same thought for a few days, especially when the dog also is blind and does not see what happens.
HERE'S THE ANSWER:
- Before the first fitting, give your dog time and let them sniff and rub their face against it. Tell them why it is good!
- Blind dogs: Remember that their instincts are quite heightened by something that would be new on their head. Always tell them what you're doing!
- Praise them and tell them how smart they look.
- And don't forget to give them their favorite treats as a reward for their cooperation!
IMPORTANT! When fitting the NovaGuard on your dog for the first time, make sure it is closed tight enough around the neck so the dog can not slip it off to the front! Remember - if he/she succeeds once, they will try it again and again...

Important Fit and Assistance
- We strongly recommend that the NovaGuard only be worn if it fits your dog correctly.
- If needed, take several pictures with the NovaGuard on your dog: a front view and each side view while taking the pictures parallel (not up or down angles) and send them (as attachments) to info@protectivepetsolutions.com or fill out the Sizing Help Form located on the Sizing tab. We’re happy to help with fit and adjustment!
Cleaning
- Clean with a wet cloth, mild liquid soap, rinse and dry well with a soft cloth. Do NOT soak it in a solution.
Surgery / Eye Medication
- PREPARING FOR ELECTIVE SURGERY: It is optimal to have the NovaGuard ahead of time to let your dog see, sniff and apply, to get them used to it. So, after surgery, they will have reduced stress as they have learned to associate wearing it as a positive experience, including getting treats 😊!

I found the Nova Guard Recovery Collar when I was ordering an OptiVizor. When I saw it on the website, I decided to order one for my greyhound - just to have on hand in case it's needed in the future if he receives an injury or surgery. For a long-nosed breed like a greyhound, the typical cones that are used are so wide and hard for the dogs to adjust to. Plus my greyhound is blind and uses his nose to guide around the house - having a cone on him would seriously impact his ability to get around. The Nova Guard is narrower than the typical cone, and so much easier for my greyhound to get used to.

After trying just about every type of E-collar made to stop my Great Dane from licking and aggravating a wound on his rear paw, I stumbled upon the Novaguard and figured it was my last hope before putting him into the last resort, a no lick muzzle. He is 160lbs with a long neck and snout. He's apparently very flexible as well. I did not trim the cone as I needed the extra length to keep him away from his paw. There was a learning curve and one of the largest hurdles has been the sound of the velcro during removal. He was able to slide the collar down on his neck but that was easily remedied with inflatable "donut" to take up the space on his neck. Thank you for making a great product. I definitely recommend and would not hesitate to purchase again if the need arises.

This is amazing! My dog was afraid to move with the hugh cone from my vet. She would sit in the same spot for hours hanging her head. The Novaguard fit perfectly with just a little easy adjustment and she was not able to reach her injured toe. She can walk around, eat and sleep very easily. My sister raved about this product after successfully using it on her dogs. Now I understand why she was so pleased. I highly recommend Novaguard.

I've used conventional and soft e-collars for years, and decided to give the ProVizor a try with a recent spay. The photo shows how both collars have roughly the same coverage in terms of preventing the dog from reaching an incision/wound (the angle makes the ProVizor look longer. If it is, it's quite subtle), but the way it fits is totally different from a conventional e-collar shape since it sits on the skull like a golf visor. The flare of the collar is really, really different which means less catching on crate doors, easier turning, less likely to be used as a weapon against your legs (for bigger dogs). If you're like me and keep a dog first aid bin for emergencies, you may want to take a look at the ProVizor. I ordered two sizes so I knew I'd find a fit.

Our greyhound had an eye injury and we were having trouble with the traditional cone, he still found ways to rub his eye on things. A friend recommended this and I absolutely love it. It stays in place and is more narrow at the opening, and longer, so it completely protects his face. This was a life saver. His wound started healing faster once we put this one him, being more of a proper fit, and we got more rest because we didn’t have to keep checking to make sure he didn’t stuff something into his cone to rub his eye on (he isn’t a good patient lol). It’s also much easier for him to get around, with the more narrow opening, he doesn’t bang it as much on doors or walls. I HIGHLY recommend it!

Her cyst was on her tail, so a place she could access with almost any arrangement of cones. She even managed with this extended version and we had to devise yet something else. None the less, I love these, especially that the ears are free; not collecting moisture or amplified sound. The ease to put it on and off; and that the weight primarily rests on the head piece, rather than the animal's neck.

I have a male Whippet and was having no luck with multiple sizes of traditional E-collars, and also a soft collar, and an inflatable collar. Protective Pet Solutions was very thorough with their detailed needs for sizing & ordering, which I appreciate especially since I have special needs with my long nosed, long legged dog. The collar is slipping back a little, but I added the inflatable e collar behind it, and it seems to be working. Finally a way to prevent him from accessing his front foot toe! Purchased this for my border collie who was having eye surgery. He got used to wearing is pretty quickly (lots of treats involved!). I trimmed the length a bit and used the foam to create a tighter fit. The foam helps to keep it from sliding around, but does seem to flake a bit from rubbing his head. Not good when you’re trying to protect his eye, but manageable.

I can't give a really thorough evaluation because my rescue Australian Cattle Dog only had to wear the protective cone collar for one day, his last day where he needed one. I wish I had found your website sooner. My dog first had to wear a protective collar following a femoral head ostectomy. Later, he wore a collar on and off from July 2021 to January 2022 because of an injury to the same leg and three resulting surgeries and when he was neutered. He never learned how to maneuver the width of a regular cone through his pet door and wore out two cones by running into everything, including me!

We have a central asian shepherd and his head is very wide. The cone is a tad narrow for his head but it works. We are also having to use tape to keep the tabs from slipping out. Could not have done this surgery without it though!!!! Overall, great product.

I am part of a Shar-Pei rescue organization and our dogs routinely come to us with entropian, which is when the eyelash rolls in and scratches the cornea. These dogs are in pain and can barely see until their eyelids are surgically corrected. With that said, they need eye protection until the delicate surgery is healed...enter the Optivizor. These things are great! No more running into the back of my legs, crashing into kitchen cabinets, furniture and door casings. The dogs don't freak out anymore and are way more comfortable in the Optivizor. They can eat, drink and get their ears cleaned or medicated (which is also another Shar-Pei condition) while wearing the Optivizor. I purchased a medium one years ago and have used it on multiple dogs over the years. Shar-Pei heads come in all sizes so I am back ordering small/medium for some smaller dogs that I've fostered here lately. You cannot go wrong with these collars.

The medium was a good fit for my Basset Hound and he adjusted o wearing it quickly. The OptiVizor and NovaGuard Recovery Collar have worked wonderfully for our elderly dog for the treatment of recurrent corneal abrasions. He wears the OptiVizor during the day, which allows him to navigate the house easily and eat and drink without issue. Since his nose is exposed he can use his sense of smell to guide him, explore, and play which is important since his eyesight is poor. And more importantly he can't rub his eyes when wearing either product. He wears the NovaGuard Recovery Collar when it's time to administer eyedrops. I give him the eyedrops and quickly slip the NovaGuard on because he immediately tries pawing at his eyes. It works at blocking him every time! Both products are far more superior to the traditional Elizabethan collar which caused him to bump into things and feel frustrated. With the OptiVizor and NovaGuard he's up and about, interacts with his environment, and can rest comfortably when he wants to.

Our Great Dane Milo has had a lick granuloma on his front leg for over 3 years. He licks it when we leave due to canine OCD and separation anxiety. We tried countless cones and sleeves, but nothing was long enough or strong enough to keep him away from licking his leg until it bled! This is the first cone we have found that actually worked and I think it is the most comfortable one since the ears hang out! The photo is the cone without it cut for reference on the length compared to the snout of a Great Dane (140 lbs). My “best friend” Max, has had allergies his entire life. Unfortunately, old age (Max is now 11 yrs) and his relentless quest to explore every nook and cranny of our farm, allowed staph and a few other nasty bacterias to penetrate his allergy sores and we almost lost him in a horrible, disfiguring and painful way. While treating his ailment, Max has been in a head cone....for months! Which caused his neck (because of the infected allergy sores) to rot. The allergy specialist tending to Max had us spraying the area with bleach water, it did dry up the moisture but it didn’t help the fact that Max’s neck looked like a slice of pizza! I found the Novaguard head cone on line and it has been a Godsend. Because of it’s open airy design Max’s neck and ears are getting air(we also punched small holes in the plastic visor) as well as the hard plastic allows light through and completely thwarts his ability to lick, which is our biggest problem. The minute we started using this cone we could see the difference in Max, he was so much happier and more active. After 5 months, Max is well on his way to recovery. I HIGHLY recommend to anyone whose pet has to use a head cone for a long period of time to try this cone. It is the best and I have tried them all. PS. It is also affordable and indestructible, Max is a big boy (Lab/Pt) and hasn’t been able to damage or remove the Novaguard.

Ordered this item for my corgi to use after surgery. It was an emergency thus had to guess on size. Yes I ordered the wrong size and the company exceeded my expectations by contacting me to make sure size was correct. Wow I was so pleased they took the time to help me with sizing. My lab has seasonal and food allergies and so regularly struggles with hot spots. The standard e-cone just does not do it. This design is great - keeping her ears free, and so much smaller and narrower than the standard cone! Customer service was super responsive and helpful! Word to the wise - follow the instructions/recommendations provided and wait to cut down the guard. I cut down the guard too soon, and my dog was too persistently trying to get to her paws by pushing the guard back off her forehead. Rookie mistake.

I purchased this in advance of a known eyelid surgery. This works much better than a traditional e-collar and it is more comfortable for the dog. Having a giant breed, an e-collar barely fits through doorways! This cone is much narrower yet long enough to fully protect the face and eyes. The only thing I would change would be to add some sort of padding, perhaps similar to the brow band, at the sides/cheek area of the cone.

This was so much more comfortable for our dog. He didn't fight it as much as a regular cone. But he did try to take it off. He couldn't get it off but did manage to get his ears underneath the plastic from time to time. I think if he has a third eye surgery, I'll try the vizor. I think it would not hold the heat around his face so much. It did the job it was intended for. Plus my dog wasn't able to destroy it like a standard cone. It looks new even after 10 days of my dog trying to take it off. I think it is an excellent product and shipping was fast.

I bought the NovaGuard Recovery Collar to be pro-active. I had no idea whether or not my vet was going to recommend the use of one. However, I wanted to be prepared, just in case, because I did not feel my new dog would do well with a traditional cone. So far, in trying it on my dog's head, it seems to fit. Obviously from the photo, I haven't cut off the length along the scored lines. I think he will be able to push it back some. However, I am prepared to try this if Milton needs it in the future! The price is right!

My Greyhound was attack by another dog while my husband was walking her in our neighborhood. She underwent four hours of surgery at an emergency vet hospital, and another two hours of surgery with our regular vet. Her wounds were extensive, and six weeks later she still has a fairly large open wound on her right hind quarter. Because she is a Greyhound with a long neck and a needle nose, we went through four cones before we found the Novaguard. This cone was a Godsend. I wish we'd had it from the beginning. I cut it off too short and had to tape it back together with shipping tape which worked more or less. My dog Lisa has lots of loose skin on her neck and the nova guard shifts considerably even when tight. Still it is a big improvement over e collars.

Ade lost her sight and we ended up making a trip to Iowa for an Ophthalmologist to try new procedures in hopes of regaining some sight. He told us we'd need a cone, so we found the Protective Pet Solutions cone that wasn't so wide and so "in the way" of her moving around. Our dog, a mini schauzer, had his eye removed due to a tumor. The shield provided from the vet was open and his brother wanted to lick his wound. Your shield was more conical in shape, easy to take on and off, and allowed us to easily remove it for short breaks during eating, etc. without pain or pulling. Your shield design is great and I am grateful that the vet gave us your brochure. It was also nice that I could confirm the size by calling you in advance of my order. Rex is doing great and I am sure, happy not to have to wear a helmet (shield) anymore! That said, it was a excellent alternative to standard gear like the Elizabethan collar given to us from the surgeon. The best ever! This "cone" is so far superior to all the others (yes, over the last 4 decades I have tried them all!), it is in a class all by itself. My favorite thing about it is the opening is only about half as wide as a regular cone. I have giant breed dogs and a regular cone is like walking through the house with an open umbrella. Great product! our 14 year old Akita/Lab mix wont stop chewing his tail. The old fashioned cone we had prevented him from getting out the doggy door. The NovaGuard allows him to drink water, go in and out the doggy dog, and stops him from chewing the hot spot on his tail. Works great! I purchased this for my dog who is suffering from allergies and licking his feet all night. I tried the Comfy Cone thinking it would be more comfortable, of course. However, it really freaked him out because it acted like a blinder and obscured his peripheral vision. He bolted every time he saw me coming at him with it. He's a Doberman with a long nose so I needed something long enough to keep him from reaching his feet. The traditional plastic cone collars aren't long enough, not even the large ones. Not to mention how cumbersome they are. The Novaguard design is great! It's clear so he can still see all around him. It's also narrow so it's easier for him to keep from bumping into everything. It fit's his head and stays in place. He doesn't object when I put it on, and is able to sleep in it through the night just fine. I learned to keep it tight around his neck so he can't push it back to get to his feet. The only caution is with the sizing. I ordered a large first because his weight and head length dictated the large based on the sizing chart. However, because he has a narrow head and thin neck, the large was too big. I called Protective Pet Solutions and discussed this with Gayla and decided to try the medium size. The medium fits perfectly. Gayla was very helpful in confirming the fit based on pictures I sent of him wearing both the large and the medium. I was happy the medium is still long enough to keep him from reaching his feet. All in all, I'm very pleased with the design and functionality and would definitely recommend the product to others. I'm also very pleased with my experience with Protective Pet Solutions!

Protective collar for dogs After much debate I received the protective collar for my dog who has allergies, I’m using it as a preventative to keep him from licking and chewing his skin. I think it is an absolute upgrade over the standard Elizabethea collar, much more sturdy yet more practical and more secure. Protective solutions was very helpful in determining the appropriate size. The only reason I don’t give five stars is ithat strangely enough my dog prefers his old collar to this one, and I’m not quite sure why. Could be he just needs more time to get used to it. If you purchase be very careful that you follow the instructions and do not shorten it until you are sure you have adequate length, we only cut one ring off and that was definitely enough. Yes I would recommend

Great product! My dog recently had surgery and used the Novaguard post-op to prevent him from licking his incision. It worked beautifully! The Novaguard fit well and stayed in place. It must be comfortable too because he didn't seem to mind wearing it! Easiest recovery ever!!!

Great Product...a little too big This is an awesome product. My dog hates to have the "cone of shame on", what dog does right? I love the concept; the narrower cone shape, holes for the ears to go through and adjustable velcro strap. Unfortunately, the measurements were a bit off so the cone we got for our Irish Wolfhound is too big. As a dog trainer myself, I work with a lot of dogs that at some point need to have surgery whether, for spay/neuter or ACL repairs or various other procedures, I have recommended this product to them all.

Innovative Design The Novaguard in the "toy" size fit my chihuahua perfectly. It is so much less cumbersome than the cone the vets have. It is very reasonably priced and very sturdy. I am so happy we found this product so that the Elizabethan cone is the thing of the past. Will be using it for three weeks once my chi has his cataract surgery. So grateful for this product.

Novaguard Remember to have your pet wear it for a while before cutting if you think it should be shorter. I made the mistake of not reading the directions fully and mine ended up being too short. So, I ordered another. This guard works very well and is better for the dog and your household furniture....

Great idea! This device works better than any other that I have used. I did a thorough research and have tried most of the dog collars on the market. This one wins hands down. As far as sizing goes, I got in touch with the seller to get some guidance on the correct collar to buy. Don't go by the weight of the dog only as my dog's correct size was small/medium and she is 60 lbs.

Life Saver - Literally! This is the best product available to limit a dog's access to a healing wound!!!! I have a Doberman with a lick granuloma that covers the entire lower hock of her hind leg- I have spent 2 years trying to find a product to prevent her licking, and none have worked until this Novaguard. The vet and I had run out of options until I found this product, and it has literally saved my dog's life. The cone is incredibly durable and long enough to keep her from reaching her foot, and the adjustability of the velcro neck is perfect for keeping her from pushing it down as well as being comfortable. Possibly the best feature is that the cone is not nearly as wide as traditional e collars so my dog can get in and out of her dog door. I will say that I originally ordered a large based on the fitting instructions and had to go down to a medium because she is such a slender breed - so maybe keep that in mind when sizing. I cannot say enough good things about this collar - even my vet is ecstatic about this find and passing it along to others. If you're on the fence, buy it, you'll be glad you did!

Perfect solution after canine cataract surgery Our fifteen year old miniature poodle had double cataract surgery two weeks ago. He has severe arthritis and degenerative disc disease particularly in the neck area and we were concerned about the need to wear a 'cone' or E collar for at least two weeks. I purchased the Novaguard as a potential alternative. Although I did need to remove it to instill the daily drops in his eyes following surgery, he was able to sleep, eat and drink and he did not fight the device. He willingly dipped his head for me to put it back on and it did a great job of protecting his fragile eyes during the healing process. Also since it is narrower than the typical E collars, he did not have problems banging into things and was able to easily maneuver. The opthamologist's technician said they might consider getting some instead of the usual E collars. We were very pleased.

Novaguard Protective Collar My lab came home from having eye surgery on both eyes wearing a standard e-collar, so in addition to being uncomfortable, he was crashing into furniture, door frames, etc. We received the novaguard quickly and the rest of his recuperation was much easier for him. Great alternative to traditional or soft e-collars The challenge of having a very smart dog is that they figure out how to extract themselves from things like a soft e-collar and even traditional e-collars. This product finally gave me the option that allowed me to have the safety of the collar without the worry of my very smart dog figuring out ways to get it off her head. Plus, she was much more comfortable moving around in the Novaguard collar because she didn't bump into things nearly as much.

Still needs tweeking I like the shape and the fit, but by having the cone overlap just below my pup's chin, she was able to eventually grab the edges and completely chew the cone apart. It only took her 4 days to figure this out and I came out on day 5 to a wide open cone, though it was still attached to her head. So kudos to the fit. I think the overlap should be on the side. The cone was able to replace both a regular cone and pillow collar I had to use to keep her from licking her haunch. I was also very disappointed with the reply from the PPS, no offer of a new cone, just an acknolwledgement of the occurrance. I ended up with a regular cone again, zip tied, so she couldn't reach the overlap (she had learned from the Novaguard). I will say the Novaguard stayed on well. I still have the large size, since I ordered 2, (1 medium and 1 large)to ensure I had the corrrect fit. This was on an 11 month old Great Pyrenees female. The pup was confined, so no other dog helped her do this. She was also walked regularly, so had lots of exercise. If it hadn't fit so well I would be giving it fewer stars.

Smart and Effective Incredibly smart improvement on the traditional cone. Purchased at dog show "just in case". Had a surgery on one of our girls this week and she is much more comfortable in this protective collar. I cannot imagine every using the old cone again.

GREAT PRODUCT and Customer Service I am a dog whisperer by profession after having been in the Military K9 program and a K9 Police Officer. A client told my about this product who has horses and dogs. My dog had just had a tumor removed and was wearing the cone-of shame. I called the company and they were uncertain about sizing, but I was sure that a large was good. When I received the product, which works exactly as described, they had sent me the next smaller size as well in case the large didn’t work. No charge. I will recommend them to all my clients, vet, and anybody else.

Excellent product I really do think this is an excellent product, however, my dog was able to sit on her tail just right to put it right in front of her mouth so she could rip her dressing off. She has chronic happy tail and refuses to keep the dressings on. Perhaps a donut type ecollar along with this will work. She can eat, drink, sleep etc. with the Novaguard and is a lot less disturbed than with the 'cone of shame' and I am sure it would would well in other situations but sadly not this one.

Great product Shipped very quickly and much better than the regular E. collar. My dog is very comfortable with the collar and he takes naps with the collar on and does not try to remove it like he usually does with the standard collar.

Great Product! I bought this for our Labrador who kept scratching her face and the area would not heal. Tried the cone we bought at a pet store but she managed to get around it and scratch! The shape of this product prevented that and wS a more comfortable fit for her. Would definitely recommend for other pet owners!
